A Chennai NGO started by a few friends six years ago, as a weekend activity, has now come to the rescue of many poor people running low on food supplies, including stranded migrant labourers. Feed The Needy has been distributing cooked food to hungry stomachs.
Founding member Bibhudatta Panda, an infotech professional, says, “During this lockdown period we have served cooked food for 12 days. During weekdays we served 50 food packets and around 100 packets during the weekends. The items mostly included staple South Indian fare, like lemon rice, sambar rice and tomato rice. I sanitised the packets and then rode around the city on my two-wheeler for distribution.’’
‘‘Apart from me, now we have 30 other volunteers; we coordinate virtually to reach out to stranded migrant labourers from Odisha and Bihar with grocery packets and dry food items like biscuits and cakes. Many of our volunteers have donated money to make this possible.’’
